How should Church and State relate to one another? What does the historic Christian faith have to say about modern issues of family and gender, government, property, and the environment? The Orthodox Church has considered questions like these for 2,000 years, while existing under political and economic conditions of freedom, tyranny, prosperity and persecution. The Russian Orthodox Church has published a document called “The Basis of the Social Concept” to provide a starting-place for discussion with the modern world, grounded in the Biblical and historic understanding of human nature, the salvation of the whole person, and the role of the Body of Christ in the world.
